Prior to his clerkship, Michael ran the Resources for Redevelopment program at the Minnesota Environmental Initiative. As director of the program, Michael supported dozens of nonprofit property-redevelopment projects and expanded the program’s scope into restoration of green spaces. With a background in research, journalism and communications, Michael collaborated on the development and expansion of MEI’s programs and multi-stakeholder partnerships working on pressing environmental policy issues such as growing renewable energy capacity, improving air quality and improving water quality during his seven-year tenure with the organization. Before joining MEI, Michael worked in communications for organizations and publications as diverse as the Minnesota North Stars, City Pages, the Carnegie Museum and the United States Golf Association.
Michael has served as the Minneapolis representative to the Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission since January 2000; he was named its chair in February 2006. While at William Mitchell, he was a member of the law review staff, and he served as vice president of the college’s chapter of the American Constitution Society, which led to an opportunity to share a dance floor in Washington, D.C., with former U.S. attorney general Janet Reno in August 2003.
